1. Case history and completion of the record card.
A thorough case history is taken. This will include:

  • the owner’s and animal’s details
  • the veterinary diagnosis
  • injuries (past or current)
  • any operations
  • details of past treatments from different practitioners
  • any changes in temperament, behaviour or performance
  • exercise regime and management information
  • confirmation that veterinary permission has been obtained.

2. Static assessment
The animal is assessed for:

  • conformational traits/abnormalities
  • symmetry of muscle development
  • signs of pain or inflammation
  • any recent injuries.

3. Gait analysis
All animals are assessed in walk and trot. Horses are also assessed on a tight circle and in rein back

4. Palpation
The joints of the body, paying particular attention to the spine and pelvis, are analysed for asymmetries which may indicate misalignments. Muscles are checked for abnormal temperature and areas of spasm and tenderness.

5. Report of findings to owner.

6. The Treatment
The affected joints are treated using specific high speed, low force adjustments. This stimulates the animal’s body to realign the joint to its normal position and relieve muscle spasm.

7. Aftercare Advice
After treatment the animal should usually rest for 24 to 48 hours. Aftercare advice may include exercise and stretching regimes and instructions on what physical activity the animal is allowed to do over the next few days. This advice should be followed by the owner as it will help to maximise the benefits of the treatment and make it more effective.
It can take up to 24 hours for the joints to adjust, so in this time the animal may feel stiff, tired, may eat less and drink more. Alternatively he/she may feel better straight away. The practitioner may need to see your animal for several treatments, or may advise that they treat it on a regular basis if problems are likely to arise, for instance in working or competing animals.
